Question 1: Why do we need to separate different components of a mixture? Give two examples.

Answer 1: We separate harmful or non-useful substances that may be mixed with useful substance. Sometimes, we separate even useful substances if we need to use them separately.

Example: Seperation of butter from curd. Seperation of stone from grains.   

Question 2: What is winnowing? Where is it used?

Answer 2: When unwanted substances are separated with the help of wind, this process is called winnowing. This process is used to separate heavier and lighter things from the mixture. 

Question 3: How will you separate husk or dirt particles from a given sample of pulses before

cooking.

Answer 3: We separate the husk or dirt from pulses by handpicking or sedimentation process.

Question 4: What is sieving? Where is it used?

Answer 4: Separation of unwanted substances from the mixture by the sieve, is called sieving. This process is used to separate impurities from flour particles.

Question 5: How will you separate sand and water from their mixture?

Answer 5: By the process of sedimentation, we can separate sand and water from their mixture.

Question 6: Is it possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour? If yes, how will you do it?

Answer 6: Yes it is possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour.  It can be separated by the process of sieving.

Question 7: How would you obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water?

Answer 7: We can find clear water from muddy water by the process of sedimentation and decantation. We can also find clear water from muddy water by filteration.

Answer 10: We should add ice after dissolving sugar in the lemonade. If we dissolve sugar before adding ice then it is possible to dissolve more sugar.
